Mary Gallagher Herndon

Mary was born on May 19, 1922 in Beverly Hills, California.  After spending her youth in southern California, she attended Marymount College in New York.

Mary met her husband, Robin C. Herndon, Jr., on a trip to Mobile with her suite-mate at college, Ann Herndon, who was Robin's sister.  After their marriage, Mary and Robin lived in several places around the country but eventually settled in Mobile.  Mary and Robin had six children so Mary's primary responsibility was taking care of her large family.

One of the family's favorite activities was visiting the family beach house at Point Clear.  Mary says that in the early days Point Clear was much more casual and natural than it is today -- everyone knew and recreated with each other.  After the children were grown, Mary and Robin moved permanently to their home in Point Clear.

After Robin's death, Mary began yearning for the casual, undeveloped environment she and her family had enjoyed so much in the early years at Point Clear.  She believed that Josephine offered the comfortable feeling she so missed.  So, in 1999, Mary moved to her bayfront home on Josephine Drive.  Soon thereafter, all of her children and their families moved to Josephine to be near her.  Mary's greatest joy is spending time with her family.

When asked about hobbies she has enjoyed during her life, she said her first love was horses.  After that she became an avid pilot, flying a Piper Cub.  Her present interests include painting and drawing.  While she would not claim to be an accomplished artist, she did modestly admit that she has "won a few awards".

Mary is an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lillian.  She is also a member of the Josephine Homeowners Association.

The Josephine community is fortunate to have such a talented and interesting person to call our neighbor.
