John and Elsie Leiterman Kane

John Kane and Elsie Leiterman were both born and raised in the small town of Elberta, Alabama.  They both graduated from Foley High School.  Even though they knew each other while in school, they never dated.

In the early 1960s, the Vietnam War was brewing.  After graduation from high school in 1963, John joined the Marine Corps.  After boot camp, John was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for two years.  After two years at Camp Lejeune, John was sent to Vietnam for a tour of duty.  As a proud American, John served four years in the Marine Corps and 29 years in the Army Reserves.  John retired from the military in 1996.

After completing his commitment to the Marine Corps, John enrolled at Yancy State Junior College, today known as Faulkner State Junior College.  About this time, Elsie's brother, Tony, asked her to attend a fertilizer meeting with him.  Little did she know, Tony was setting her up to meet John.  Romance blossomed.  John and Elsie dated for four years and were married in January 1971.

John graduated from University of South Alabama with a degree in Management/Marketing.  For a short time, John sold insurance but he soon discovered that a job in insurance sales was not what John wanted to do for the rest of his working career.  As a young child, John had had a passion for working with wood and building construction.  When the opportunity arrived, John changed jobs and he worked with a construction firm for 17 years.  Then a new door opened: the opportunity to teach building construction at vocational school.  After 24 years of teaching building construction, John will retire on December 1, 2012.

When John and Elsie's two children, Julie and James, were born, Elsie decided to leave her job with an insurance company and be a stay-at-home mom.  Elsie wanted to get involved in horticulture and gardening with their children.  Julie and James were able to earn their spending money from gardening and still managed to save enough money to buy their own vehicles when they reached the age of 16.

Julie graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Veterinary Science.  She joined the Army with the rank of Captain and is now a Major.  Dr. Major Julie Kane Fitzgerald is involved in animal research at Ft. George Meade, Maryland.  James graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Military Science.  He served in the Iraq war in 2003.  He is currently a Major in the Army Reserve and teaches at Georgia Tech University and Kennesaw State University.

In 1993, Elsie developed a zest for higher education.  She enrolled in Troy State University and graduated in 1996 with a degree in Business Education.  She taught at South Baldwin Center for Technology for 15 years and recently retired in June 2012.

Together, John and Elsie still maintain Kane's Produce and Truck Garden, mainly for family, friends, and anyone who wants to sit a spell and chat.  Retirement has enabled John and Elsie more free travel time to visit their children.
